“This child will be called, Sigurd, just like his grandfather!” Ragnar roared it out across the great hall. His wife was seated beside him, exhaustion present on her face. However, she told him she wouldn’t miss this event for anything.

Aslaug.

His wife’s name was Aslaug.

He still couldn’t believe it. After all those weeks of worry, Ragnar couldn’t even care that they were about to become fierce enemies with the one country he never imagined he would. Instead, he stared at his wife, the woman he loved just as much as he had his other wife, Thora, and thanked the gods for blessing him so.

People had not believed the story when Ragnar first told it to them, explaining Aslaug’s lineage and how she was as dignified and of as high a standing as he was. But, if the king said it was so, eventually, people had to believe it.

However, it was telling his men—those that had been bound to secrecy about the upcoming marriage to Ingibjorg—that brought Ragnar the most joy. He was able to look at Rolf and Leif and tell them just how important his queen really was and how huge a mistake they had made on her behalf. It was like watching an event unfold that someone had sworn would not occur but had anyway, against all of the odds.

Ragnar smirked as he told them. Rolf looked horrified, and Ragnar wondered if he worried about his fate as a result of the news. Although, Ragnar knew Rolf was too good a warrior to warrant letting him go, or even killing him outright. Leif was contrite, looking down, looking across the hall, looking anywhere but at his king.

He was relieved more than anything when it came to the birth of Sigurd. While Ragnar would have to worry about the consequences of the news heading towards Sweden, he was happy to know that his family would stay the same.

With the birth of Aslaug from the peasant girl, Kraka, people would create new tales, no longer about the king and the peasant. Instead, people would talk of how the king had always known his farmer girl was more than she presented to the world. There would be those who commented about how Aslaug had always seemed more regal than her upbringing had expected. And, how some people had just known she was more important than a peasant girl could ever be.

Ragnar smiled at the prospect of this.
